Dr. Eric Berg highlights 12 symptoms of vitamin D deficiency that people may not be aware of.

Why are the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency not common knowledge, especially in temperate regions of the world where the Sun’s rays are weaker and, particularly during the winter months, there is less direct sunlight that reaches the ground and even less that reaches our bare skin?

Is it because effective vitamin D treatment competes with Big Pharma and will interfere with their profits?

Introduction

Dr. Eric Berg received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1988. His use of “Dr.” solely refers to that degree.  He no longer practices chiropractic. He now focuses on health education through social media, specialising in healthy ketosis and intermittent fasting. He is the author of the best-selling book ‘The Healthy Keto Plan’ and is the Director of Dr. Berg Nutritionals.

Dr. Berg discusses vitamin D deficiency and its symptoms extensively. According to Dr. Berg, vitamin D deficiency can lead to a variety of health issues, including bone pain, low immunity, depression, high blood pressure, inflammation, asthma and poor sleep. He also highlights less commonly known symptoms such as nightmares, restless leg syndrome, skin disorders like psoriasis and eczema, and even mood disorders like bipolar.

Dr. Berg explains that vitamin D deficiency can be caused by a lack of adequate sunlight exposure, certain medical conditions that reduce intestinal vitamin D absorption and the use of medications that can impair vitamin D metabolism. He emphasises that vitamin D is crucial for calcium absorption and bone health, and its deficiency can increase the risk of musculoskeletal problems, autoimmune diseases, mood disorders and certain cancers.

In his articles and videos, Dr. Berg provides detailed information on the benefits of vitamin D and the risks associated with deficiency. He suggests that vitamin D supplementation may be necessary for those at risk of deficiency or with underlying health issues affecting vitamin D metabolism. However, he also warns about the risks of vitamin D toxicity, which can occur with high doses of supplements and can lead to excessive calcium levels in the body.

Dr. Berg recommends that people examine their stress levels, diet and gallbladder function to address vitamin D deficiency effectively. He also mentions that excessive cortisol can block vitamin D receptors, further complicating the issue of vitamin D deficiency.

According to the Express, the UK government advises everyone in the UK to consider taking a daily supplement containing 10mcg (400 international units, “IU”) of vitamin D in autumn and winter.  The US National Institutes of Health recommends 600 IU to 800 IU per day.

12 Bizarre Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency That Might Shock You

Yesterday, Dr. Berg posted a Twitter (now X) thread listing 12 bizarre symptoms of vitamin D deficiency that we may not know.  The thread includes video clips, all but two of which are taken from the video below. It includes 11 symptoms to which he has added a twelfth (number 4 in the text below).

The text that follows the video has been adapted from Dr. Berg’s Twitter thread.

Dr. Eric Berg DC: 11 Bizarre Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency (You Need to Know), 8 September 2024 (14 mins)

1. Your head starts sweating uncontrollably. This bizarre symptom shows up in infants, teenagers and adults. Excessive head sweating is a red flag, especially in children. Why? First, 25,000 genes exist in your body – 10% are directly controlled by vitamin D. Your blood tests only show inactive vitamin D, not what’s happening in your cells.

2. Your sleep gets destroyed by night sweats.  You wake up with a soaked pillow despite cool temperatures.  Vitamin D deficiency triggers an overactive immune response, disrupting your body’s temperature control centre.

3. Your emotions become a rollercoaster.  Vitamin D directly controls your emotional regulation through complex brain pathways.  Adequate vitamin D levels help protect neurons and reduce inflammation, which can otherwise exacerbate mood disorders.

4. When you are vitamin D deficient, you run the risk of a dysfunctional immune system.  This may cause symptoms like autoimmune reactions, recurrent infections, chronic fatigue and inflammation.  The short video below shows why.

5. Your motivation vanishes completely.  Tasks pile up. Everything feels overwhelming.  This isn’t laziness – it’s your brain’s motivation centre malfunctioning without vitamin D.

6. Panic attacks strike unexpectedly.  These aren’t just anxiety episodes. Your brain’s fear centre is malfunctioning from a lack of vitamin D, disrupting crucial serotonin pathways.

7. A deep ache sets into your bones.  Not sharp pain, but a deep internal ache especially in your: hips, pelvis, upper legs and lower back.  This is osteomalacia beginning where your bones are literally softening.

8. Your muscles start failing you.  Without vitamin D, calcium can’t enter your muscle cells properly.  The result? Progressive weakness, especially in the legs and shoulders. Your muscles physically can’t contract.

9. Your joints become stiff.  Stiffness takes over your knees and fingers as vitamin D is crucial for cartilage and collagen.

10. Fatigue becomes your new normal.  Your cellular energy factories (mitochondria) are dying. Old viruses can reactivate, draining you further.

11. Your brain feels like it’s in a fog.  Decision-making becomes impossible. Focus vanishes.

12. You can’t stop eating yet never feel satisfied.  Without vitamin D, nutrients can’t properly enter your cells, leaving you constantly craving more.

Why are symptoms of vitamin D deficiency not widely publicised so they are common knowledge?

A clip inserted into the video at the start of this section holds the clue.

Dr. Bruce Hollis is a prominent researcher in the field of vitamin D, particularly focusing on its effects during pregnancy and lactation. He is a Professor of Paediatrics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Medical University of South Carolina.

When Dr. Bruce Hollis presented his findings to top vitamin D researchers, he was attacked for his conclusions.  Why? Because effective vitamin D treatment directly competes with the top-selling drugs on the market.  (You can watch a longer clip of Dr. Hollis where he made the remarks about being attacked for his research in another video published by Dr. Berg HERE.)
